Pablo Picasso was a famous painter of the 1900’s. He started painting at a very young age. He painted in many different styles during his life. Picasso is known for his Blue Period paintings, when he painted sad and lonely pictures at this time using lots of blue, and his Rose Period, when his paintings were happier and often were of clowns and circus performers and used warmer colors. He was also know for a style of art called Cubism. His pictures looked like puzzles with the pieces all out of order. He might have a face with the eyes looking at you but the nose might look like you were looking at the side of the face. Often Picasso glued things onto his paintings to add reality to them. He was one of the first artists to do this and it was the start of making collages.
*Talk with your child about collages.
Collage comes from the French word coller which means “to glue”. A collage may include newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or hand-made papers, portions of other artwork, photographs, plants and other found objects, glued to a piece of paper or canvas. The origins of collage can be traced back hundreds of years.
